As Marseille fell to French and American control on the southern coast of France, scattered assault units of the Seventh Army converged on a narrow section of the Rhone River valley at Montelimar. The town, known since the 1700s for its nougat, served as a communications hub to the south of France and was in the path of the retreating German 19th Army on Highway 7. |
