Scenes like this on the autobahn in southern Germany were common in the closing days of the war as long columns of German prisoners were marched north to POW camps. The American army was still facing the Bavarian Redoubt around Salzburg, Austria where they believed that Hitler's Waffen SS troops had assembled terrific stocks of wealth, arms and food for a long drawn out fight to the finish.
