The Third Division was assembled at Pozzuoli in July 1944 and readied along with the 36th and 45th infantry divisions to make up the primary VI Corps force for Operation Dragoon. All three divisions had taken part in the Anzio action and the drive to Rome as part of the American Fifth Army but had been ordered to the vicinity of Naples where they would assemble under the rejuvenated Seventh Army.
