The Third Division was chosen to deal with the Colmar problem. In mid-December the 30th Regiment, lauded for its recent attachment to the French I Corps fight south of Colmar, was sent through the wintry Vosges as a vanguard force to relieve the battered 36th Infantry Division attached to French II Corps in the north.
