Outside Traunstein, 47 km from Berchtesgaden, Third Division HQ staff cars transport captured Nazi officers to the command post to dictate surrender terms. The myth of the Bavarian Redoubt was unraveling and Germany's complete surrender, ordered by Admiral Donitz (Hitler's successor) on May 4, 1945 was a few days away. The XV Corps attack moving south from Munich had the Third Division on the left, the 42nd in the center and the 86th on the right.
