Photographer Howard Nickelson was sent to the port city of Civatevecchia to capture, on film, "Anzio Annie" in defeat. This shot shows the massive breech lock of the giant weapon. Records show that 523 rounds were fired at Anzio from this and its sister weapon beginning in late March 1944. Note the grafitti etched in the gun's metal by visiting GIs.
