General Mark Clark, commander of the Fifth Army inspects Third Division soldiers with General O'Daniel on the Anzio beachhead. The beachhead force was being readied for the drive to Rome. In mid-May, the American Fifth and British Eighth armies began their second offensive against the Gustav Line in the south which finally broke on May 15 to begin the drive that would eventually link them to the Anzio defenders.
